Kumho Expands Victorian Distribution Capacity as Tyre Market Diversifies

Kumho Tyre Warehouse

Kumho Tyre Australia has significantly expanded its Victorian warehousing capacity, opening a new distribution centre in Melbourne’s south-east as the number of tyre sizes, patterns and vehicle applications being carried by distributors continues to grow.

The new facility near Pakenham has more than 16,000 square metres of warehouse space and capacity for more than 180,000 tyres. It replaces Kumho’s previous Dandenong South distribution centre, which opened in 2014 and could hold approximately 130,000 tyres.

The move represents an increase of more than 60 per cent in available warehouse space compared with the previous 10,000-square-metre facility. The new building also incorporates higher ceilings and additional loading docks designed to improve the movement of stock through the warehouse and onto delivery vehicles.

More Vehicles Mean More Tyres to Stock

While increased sales volumes are one factor behind larger distribution facilities, Kumho says the changing Australian vehicle parc is also creating a need to carry a broader inventory.

The rapid expansion of electric vehicles, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, SUVs and 4WDs, along with the arrival of new vehicle brands, means distributors increasingly need to accommodate a wider combination of tyre sizes, load requirements and product patterns.

Kumho Victorian State Manager Alan Knight said the changing vehicle market meant the company needed to carry more products more frequently, with the new warehouse allowing Kumho to increase the proportion of EV-compatible tyres held locally.

That diversification is particularly relevant for tyre distribution. Two vehicles occupying similar segments can require substantially different tyre sizes and specifications, while larger SUVs and EVs can introduce additional requirements around load capacity and tyre construction.

For distributors, that potentially means more individual stock keeping units competing for warehouse space even before overall tyre volumes increase.

Location Designed Around Distribution

The new facility is located near the Princes Motorway, providing access towards Melbourne as well as regional Victorian markets.

Kumho says the location, combined with additional loading docks, is intended to improve the speed at which orders can move through the warehouse and into its dealer network.

The investment also continues a broader redevelopment of Kumho’s Australian distribution infrastructure.

In 2022, the company relocated its Australian headquarters and NSW distribution operations to a new facility at Marsden Park in Sydney’s north-west. Kumho also operates distribution facilities at Willawong in Brisbane and an 8,500-square-metre warehouse in Perth. The company says it is planning to expand its South Australian presence during 2027.

A Bigger Inventory Challenge for the Tyre Industry

The Victorian expansion highlights a less visible consequence of the changing Australian new-car market.

A tyre distributor no longer simply needs enough stock. It needs the right stock.

As the Australian vehicle parc becomes increasingly diverse, distributors and retailers need to support conventional passenger cars alongside SUVs, 4WDs, commercial vehicles, hybrids and EVs, while accommodating a growing number of wheel diameters, tyre dimensions and vehicle-specific requirements.

Kumho already offers tyres across passenger, SUV and 4WD, EV, light commercial and truck and bus applications in Australia. The company says it sells more than 1.2 million tyres annually in the Australian market.

Moving from a 130,000-tyre Victorian warehouse to one capable of holding more than 180,000 tyres therefore represents more than simply adding storage capacity. It gives Kumho additional room to broaden the range of products held locally and respond to a vehicle market that is becoming increasingly fragmented.

For tyre retailers, the practical measure of that investment will ultimately be availability: whether the increasingly specific tyre required for a customer’s vehicle can be supplied when it is needed.
